Nigerian Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive to halt unnecessary arrests and detentions of youths nationwide. This move comes as Egbetokun faces criticism for arbitrary arrests, detentions, and human rights violations.
Key Directives
Immediate Stop to Unnecessary Arrests:All police personnel are ordered to cease arrests and detentions without valid reasons.
No Arbitrary Phone Checks: The collection and checking of phones at checkpoints are prohibited.
Consequences for Non-Compliance: Police personnel, including Commissioners and supervisors, will face punishment for violating these directives.
The police hierarchy emphasized that such impunity and unlawful attitudes have tarnished the image of the Nigeria Police Force. These infractions contributed to the #EndSARS protest, which resulted in destruction of properties and loss of life .
