The capital of Oyo State, Ibadan, witnessed a historic event today as Governor Seyi Makinde officially presented the staff and instrument of office to Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, at the iconic Mapo Hall Grounds. The event, attended by top dignitaries from across Nigeria, marks a significant milestone in the rich cultural heritage of Ibadan.
Governor Makinde, in his address, highlighted the symbolic importance of Oba Olakulehin’s coronation, stating that it exemplifies the enduring and resilient spirit of Ibadan. He noted that the new Olubadan’s ascension brings unity, moving past divisive elements within the city. The governor’s statement, released by Sulaimon Olanrewaju, his Special Adviser (Media), underscored the significance of the occasion.
“I, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by Sections 1 and 2 subsection 20 of the Oyo State Chiefs Law, Cap 28, Volume 1 Laws of Oyo State, Nigeria, hereby present the staff of office, ratifying the appointment of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland,” Governor Makinde declared. “This event demonstrates the resilience of Ibadanland and its people, putting to shame those who focus on divisions. I greet the Kabiyesi and pray for a long, prosperous reign.”
The President of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu, congratulated Oba Olakulehin. He praised the Ibadan monarchical system’s enduring tradition and resilience, commending Governor Makinde for adhering to traditional protocols in appointing the new monarch.
“It gives me immense pleasure to be part of this coronation and the presentation of the staff of office to Oba Owolabi Olakulehin,” said President Tinubu. “We celebrate not just the ascension of Oba Olakulehin but also the enduring tradition and resilience of the Ibadan monarchy. The whole country can learn from the rancor-free Ibadan kingship model.”
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum also congratulated the new Olubadan and Governor Makinde, describing the event as the beginning of a new era.
Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the event’s significance in honoring Ibadan’s rich cultural legacy. She applauded Governor Makinde’s commitment to promoting Oyo State’s cultural heritage.
In his vote of thanks, Hon. Ademola Ojo, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, appreciated Governor Makinde for his leadership and dedication to preserving Ibadan’s cultural heritage. “Governor Makinde’s vision and support have been instrumental in making this historic coronation ceremony a reality,” he said.
Oba Olakulehin, in his acceptance speech, thanked Governor Makinde for his unwavering support of the traditional institution and expressed gratitude to all attendees.
The event was graced by numerous dignitaries, including the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II); former Military Administrator, General Oladayo Popoola (rtd); former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja; and governors and representatives from various states, including Osun, Ondo, Lagos, and more. Also present were Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barr. Bayo Lawal; former Deputy Governors, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi and Chief Moses Alake-Adeyemo; National Chairman (South) of the PDP, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; and other notable figures.
The ceremony marks a new chapter in Ibadan’s history, celebrating the city’s rich traditions and promising a future of unity and progress under the leadership of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin.
