The Oyo State Medical and Health Workers Union has announced its decision to embark on an indefinite strike starting Monday. This development was confirmed by the Union’s Chairman, Comrade John Fabunmi, during a radio program today.
Comrade Fabunmi explained that the decision to strike came after numerous consultations with the appropriate authorities yielded no positive response. He emphasized that the Union has been patient and has engaged in several dialogues with the state government, but their long-standing demands remain unmet.
The primary issues at the heart of the strike are the non-payment of necessary allowances and other critical considerations for medical and health workers in the state. Comrade Fabunmi stated that the Union’s demands include the payment of hazard allowances, implementation of the new minimum wage, and improvement of working conditions for health workers.
“We have exhausted all avenues of dialogue and consultation with the state government, but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. We have no choice but to take this action to press for our rights and ensure that our members are treated fairly,” said Fabunmi.
The Union leader also highlighted the importance of these demands in ensuring that medical and health workers can perform their duties effectively. “Our members are the backbone of the healthcare system in Oyo State. Without proper compensation and working conditions, it becomes extremely challenging to provide the quality care that our citizens deserve.”
The announcement of the strike has raised concerns about the potential impact on healthcare services across the state. Hospitals and health centers are expected to experience significant disruptions, affecting patient care and service delivery.
Comrade Fabunmi urged the state government to take immediate action to address their demands and prevent the strike from continuing indefinitely. “We are ready to resume work as soon as our demands are met. The ball is now in the government’s court to respond positively and avert a prolonged disruption of healthcare services in Oyo State.”
As the strike looms, residents of Oyo State are advised to seek alternative healthcare arrangements and prepare for possible service interruptions at public health facilities. The Union remains hopeful that the state government will engage in meaningful negotiations to resolve the issues and restore normalcy to the healthcare sector.
