In a somber reflection following the death of children in a tragic stampede at a private funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has announced the cancellation of his planned birthday celebrations. The decision underscores his deep sense of mourning and respect for the lives lost in the avoidable incident.

The governor made this known on Friday while receiving a delegation of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone, who visited to commiserate with him and the people of Oyo State.

Makinde, who also canceled a birthday lecture planned in his honor in Ebonyi State, said in a statement released by his Special Adviser (Media), Sulaimon Olanrewaju, on December 20, 2024, that the loss of innocent children was deeply painful.

“We flew into Abuja intending to proceed to Ebonyi when this tragic event unfolded on Wednesday. My immediate concern was to secure the venue and ensure that necessary measures were taken,” Makinde said. “This incident could have been entirely avoided if due diligence had been done by the organizers. The most painful part for me is that the deceased were innocent children.”

He commended the South-East PDP leaders for their physical presence and show of solidarity, noting, “Your visit signifies that the people of Oyo State are not alone in these trying times. It has been a difficult year, with incidents such as the Bodija explosion, but the support and love shown strengthen us.”

Makinde further declared, “There will be no birthday celebration for me this year. I have sent the message out to everyone: no parties, just reflection. This is a period to honor the departed and their grieving families.”

The delegation, led by Dr. Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees and former Senate President, included prominent PDP stalwarts such as:

– Dr. Sam Egwu, former Governor of Ebonyi State

– Senator Ben Obi, former National Secretary of the PDP

– Iyom Josephine Anenih, former National Woman Leader of the PDP

– Chief SKE Udeokoye, newly affirmed PDP National Secretary

– Chief Ali Odefa, PDP National Vice Chairman (South-East)

– Chief Obasi Elebi

– Chief Onyema Nwele, PDP Chairman, Ebonyi State

Dr. Wabara expressed the delegation’s heartfelt condolences, emphasizing Governor Makinde’s admiration within the South-East region. “When Oyo State weeps, the entire South-East feels the pain. These children are not just Oyo children; they are Nigerians, and their loss is deeply felt. If it were possible, the South-East would cancel Christmas to mourn alongside you,” Wabara said.

Governor Makinde assured the delegation that a thorough investigation is underway and promised that measures would be put in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.

During the visit, Governor Makinde also extended his congratulations to Chief SKE Udeokoye on his affirmation as PDP National Secretary by the Court of Appeal and to the new Chairman of Ebonyi State PDP. Makinde advised the newly appointed officials to uphold fairness and provide firm leadership.

The governor concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the people of Oyo State, stating that support from within and beyond the state reinforces his resolve to prioritize the welfare and safety of every resident.
