Nollywood actor and movie producer Chris Bassey has made a significant career shift after relocating from Nigeria to Canada. The actor, known for his roles in various Nollywood productions, has taken up a career in plumbing, a move he believes offers a more rewarding and balanced lifestyle compared to his previous work in the entertainment industry.
During a live chat on Instagram with popular media personality Daddy Freeze, Bassey shared insights into his new life in Canada. When asked about his current career, Daddy Freeze inquired, “I know you as a producer and actor; what career are you into in this Yankee?” To this, Bassey responded, “I’m into construction here. I do construction; I am a plumber.”
The revelation caught Daddy Freeze by surprise, prompting him to question why an established actor would make such a drastic transition despite his fame. Bassey explained that his decision was driven by both financial benefits and quality of life. He noted that his plumbing job offers better pay than some tech jobs in Canada, along with a more relaxed and flexible lifestyle.
Speaking further in pidgin English, Bassey added, “In the last seven months, the provinces I have visited just on weekends in Canada, even person wey dey do tech no fit afford am. For here, I don’t know about the UK or US.” This statement highlights how his new career has afforded him the opportunity to explore and experience different parts of Canada, something he suggests may not be as easily attainable even for those in high-paying tech roles.
Bassey’s transition reflects the broader narrative of many immigrants who, despite achieving a level of fame or success in their home countries, choose to explore new paths and opportunities abroad. His story resonates with many who seek a balance between financial stability and a better quality of life, showing that career changes, no matter how unconventional, can lead to unexpected but fulfilling outcomes.
