Nigeria’s hope of winning a medal at the ongoing 2024 Olympic Games was dashed after Hannah Reuben crashed out in the women’s freestyle wrestling 76kg category on Saturday.
Reuben lost 5-2 to Mongolia’s Davaanasan Amar in their round of 16 contest. Her defeat marked the end of Nigeria’s campaign in Paris 2024, capping a disappointing outing for the country.
This is the first time Nigeria has failed to win a single medal at the Olympics since the 2012 edition in London. The poor performance has prompted calls for a comprehensive review of the country’s sports programs and strategies.
Team Nigeria will now have to return to the drawing board in preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be hosted by Los Angeles. Sports officials and stakeholders are expected to assess the shortcomings of the current campaign and develop plans to improve the nation’s chances in future competitions.
The Nigerian sports community is looking ahead with hope and determination, aiming to rebuild and come back stronger in 2028, ensuring that the country’s athletes are better prepared and supported to compete at the highest level.
