The Oyo State Government has been called upon to strengthen infection prevention and control training for healthcare workers in response to a Lassa fever outbreak in Saki, which reportedly claimed five lives within three days.
Hon. Shittu Ibrahim Aremu, representing Saki West State Constituency, raised this concern during a matter of urgent public importance at the Oyo State House of Assembly. He emphasized the necessity of immediate and proactive measures to curb the spread of the disease and protect public health.
In his address, Hon. Aremu acknowledged the efforts of the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, who deployed a Rapid Response Team to address the outbreak. However, he stressed that more needs to be done to educate the public about the symptoms and preventive strategies for Lassa fever, which is often spread through contact with infected rodents or contaminated food and surfaces.
Hon. Aremu urged the government to allocate resources for comprehensive training programs for healthcare workers, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to manage infectious diseases effectively. He also called for widespread public health campaigns to enhance community awareness and encourage early reporting of suspected cases.
The Assembly echoed Hon. Aremu’s sentiments, recognizing the importance of coordinated efforts in tackling the outbreak and preventing future occurrences.
