Conference Highlights the Importance of a Unified Naija Language, Showcases Pidgin as a Tool for National Unity
The call for Nigeria to adopt a single, unifying language—referred to as “Naija language”—was reemphasized today at the ongoing conference titled *”Naija na Hẹlẹlẹ,”* organized by the 9ja Language Network. The conference, which focuses on the relevance of Nigerian Pidgin in both global and local contexts, underscores the role of Naija Pidgin as a bridge between Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups and languages.
Held at the KAAF Auditorium, Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Ibadan, the event marks a major milestone in promoting Nigerian Pidgin. It featured the unveiling of the first-ever Pidgin-to-Pidgin language dictionary, an important resource aimed at preserving and standardizing the language. Additionally, various publications from Jehovah’s Witnesses, translated into Nigerian Pidgin, were showcased as part of the event’s exhibitions, demonstrating how the language can effectively communicate important messages to the public.
The four-day event, scheduled to run from October 2 to 5, 2024, commenced with opening remarks from Professor Francis Egbokhare, the conference convener. In his address, Professor Egbokhare highlighted the challenges and triumphs he faced while publishing the Pidgin dictionary, emphasizing the significance of this achievement in the broader context of Nigerian linguistic development.
Also speaking at the conference, Olusegun Eroyemi, Spokesperson for Jehovah’s Witnesses in Nigeria, reflected on the organization’s efforts to use Pidgin in reaching a wider audience. Eroyemi explained how the use of Nigerian Pidgin in religious publications has helped break down language barriers and resonate more deeply with people, making important teachings accessible to a broader spectrum of Nigerians.
Looking ahead, the conference will explore the theme of “From Marginalization to Mainstream” in tomorrow’s sessions, focusing on the evolution of Naija Pidgin and its prospects for future growth. Key discussions will center around how this language, once considered marginal, is now gaining traction as a symbol of unity and inclusivity in Nigeria’s multilingual landscape.
