Twenty-two protesters arrested at the Lekki Toll Gate during the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests have been released after facing police brutality. The group had gathered to honor victims of the 2020 police violence in Nigeria.
Hassan Taiwo Soweto, National Spokesman for the Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), confirmed their release, stating that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police personally visited Panti Police Station to facilitate it. However, he condemned the brutality that occurred during their arrest, including reports of sexual molestation, physical assault, and the stripping of a male protester.
Soweto emphasized that the fight for justice continues and expressed outrage over the violation of protesters’ rights, especially on a day meant to commemorate a tragic event. Several organizations, including Amnesty International and RULAAC, also criticized the police for their heavy-handed approach.
The arrested individuals, many of whom were injured, vowed to keep fighting against government oppression and for justice in the face of ongoing police brutality.
