Effective leadership is characterized by a willingness to take responsibility, and Governor Seyi Makinde exemplifies this quality. A good leader does not shift blame or make excuses but instead owns up to mistakes and learns from them.
Regarding budgets, we have significantly improved performance from 30-35% to over 70%. What we are doing is expanding our economy, despite limited resources, to produce more and uplift people from poverty to prosperity, driving sustainable development and economic recovery. Additionally, we are making deliberate efforts to ensure inclusivity, touching every group in the state – traders, artisans, and more.
During his media chat on Saturday, December 21, 2024, Governor Makinde shared updates on recent incidents and ongoing projects. Speaking on the Bodija explosion, he revealed that the Nigerian Society of Engineers had visited the site, conducted a valuation, and promised support for the affected people. He also noted that the road contract in the axis has been awarded.
Addressing the Ibadan Circular Road project, Governor Makinde made a bold statement during the interview:
“We are building a motorway that will redefine the city limits. The 32-kilometer stretch has only two exit points, which requires maintaining a proper corridor. This is a government decision for the good of the people of Oyo State, not just mine as Seyi Makinde.”
In a candid exchange with Edmund Obilo, a renowned journalist, the Governor was asked:
Q: Are you a land grabber?
A: I am not a land grabber. Only an idiot does things the same way and expects a different result. Past leaders tried their best but probably didn’t investigate why certain narratives were being spread. Ironically, it’s the actual land grabbers who call me a land grabber.”
He further addressed the controversy surrounding the relocation of mechanics, stating:
“Those who accused me of being a thief for relocating them could not even show evidence of legitimate ownership of their mechanic shops. Some of them came from Lagos. So, who sponsored that narrative?”
Despite the solemn and sober mood during the interview, Governor Makinde expressed his shock and deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at the Ibadan Funfair event, powered by Wings Foundation (founded by Prophetess Naomi Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife). The incident led to the unfortunate loss of 35 innocent children – a devastating blow to the community and the nation.
Governor Makinde’s leadership demonstrates accountability to his people. He reassured the public of his unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, as he swore to during his inauguration on May 29, 2019. His humble spirit and dedication inspire hope, and we can only pray for his continued success. May God grant Nigeria more leaders with such a vision to rekindle the lost hope of our nation.
