The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki on its watchlist, citing concerns over financial activities during his administration. This move comes as investigations revealed large withdrawals from the state’s derivation account shortly before the end of his tenure on November 12, 2024. For example, of ₦24.6 billion recently deposited into the account, only ₦14 billion remained within a week.
Key officials, including the state’s Accountant General, were arrested over these transactions as part of the EFCC’s efforts to address alleged mismanagement. Obaseki’s successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, has established a 14-member committee to review state assets and contracts awarded during the former governor’s administration.
Before leaving office, Obaseki acknowledged the EFCC’s focus and expressed his willingness to cooperate with the agency. However, his administration also faced allegations from his former deputy, Philip Shaibu, who claimed there were last-minute attempts to loot state funds and borrow excessively.
This investigation reflects broader concerns about public accountability and may have significant legal and political consequences as the EFCC seeks to resolve these allegations.
