Former Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on March 4, 2025, over allegations of a N700 billion fraud. Emmanuel, who served as governor from 2015 to 2023, was detained after honoring an EFCC invitation at its headquarters in Abuja.

The arrest followed a petition by the civil society organization Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT), which accused Emmanuel of financial misconduct, including money laundering, diversion of funds, and misappropriation of state resources. NACAT alleged that during his tenure, Emmanuel received N3 trillion from the Federation Account but left the state with a debt profile of N500 billion and unpaid ongoing projects worth N300 billion. Additionally, investigations reportedly uncovered a cash withdrawal of N31 billion from an account titled ‘Office of the Governor’ between 2019 and 2023.
As of now, the EFCC has not released an official statement regarding Emmanuel’s arrest, and its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, has not responded to inquiries.
