Nigerian Police Detain Musician Speed Darlington Following Petition by Burna Boy
Nigerian singer, comedian, and content creator, Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been in police custody in Abuja since Friday, following a petition filed against him by Grammy-winning afrobeat star, Damini Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy.
The arrest stems from allegations of cyberstalking made by Burna Boy against Speed Darlington. According to reports, the petition accuses Speed Darlington of using social media platforms to make defamatory and harassing statements about Burna Boy.
Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has since visited Speed Darlington in detention. Speaking to SaharaReporters, Adeyanju confirmed that he reviewed the petition and discussed the circumstances surrounding the musician’s arrest. He stated that efforts are underway to ensure that the artist’s rights are respected throughout the legal process.
Speed Darlington, known for his outspoken and often controversial social media persona, has gained attention for his satirical takes and humorous commentary on Nigerian entertainment and politics. However, his recent remarks appear to have crossed a line, prompting Burna Boy to take legal action.
The Nigerian police have yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but sources indicate that investigations are ongoing. The detention has sparked discussions on social media, with many calling for a balance between freedom of expression and responsible use of online platforms.
Speed Darlington’s fans and supporters are reportedly advocating for his release, while others await further details from law enforcement on the specific charges and legal proceedings that may follow.
