Scores of traders and butchers at the newly constructed Wazobia (Wazo) market in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, were locked out of their shops on Friday following the enforcement of a court judgment.

The traders were barred from accessing the market after an Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ogbomoso, ruled in favor of a private firm claiming ownership of the 1.875-hectare land on which the market is located. The judgment, delivered on August 26, 2024, ordered the firm to take possession of the disputed land.

It was gathered that the plaintiff had initiated legal proceedings to recover the land, which had been allocated to butchers by the Oyo State government through the Ogbomoso North Local Government earlier this year. The court’s decision, presided over by Justice K.B. Olawoyin, upheld the plaintiff’s claim, resulting in the eviction of traders from the market.

The situation has sparked concerns among the affected traders, who now face uncertainty over the future of their businesses as the legal tussle between the state government and the private firm continues.
