Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has defended the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to engage in peaceful protests amid growing economic challenges and reports of planned demonstrations.
In a statement released today on X (formerly Twitter), Atiku emphasized the legal basis for public demonstrations, stating that the rights of citizens to protest are enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and affirmed by the courts.
Atiku condemned attempts to prevent protests, describing such efforts as futile. He highlighted that Nigerians, including supporters of President Tinubu, are experiencing hunger, anger, and hopelessness due to the current government’s incompetence.
“The right to protest is a fundamental aspect of our democracy,” Atiku asserted. “Attempts to suppress these rights are not only unconstitutional but also counterproductive when the root causes of the public’s discontent are not addressed.”
