The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening a fresh strike if long-standing issues dating back to 2009 are not resolved.
In a statement by ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, the union demanded the immediate renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement based on the Nimi Briggs Committee’s 2021 Draft Agreement. ASUU also called for the release of withheld salaries from the 2022 strike, expressing frustration with the government’s delays and lack of commitment.
ASUU warned that the unresolved issues are creating a crisis in the public university system, and any industrial action resulting from the government’s inaction should not be blamed on the union.
Other key demands include the release of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct roles affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), funding for university revitalization, payment of Earned Academic Allowances, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) to replace IPPIS.
ASUU also raised concerns over the proliferation of universities by the Federal and State Governments, the implementation of university visitation panel reports, and the reversal of the illegal dissolution of Governing Councils.
The union emphasized that failure to address these issues within the 14-day window could lead to another round of industrial action.
