The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed a devastating incident that occurred earlier today at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja. A stampede broke out during a food distribution event, resulting in the tragic loss of 10 lives, including four children.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred around 6:30 am when a massive crowd of over 1,000 people gathered to receive food items intended for vulnerable and elderly members of the community.
Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd became increasingly restless as the distribution event commenced, ultimately leading to a chaotic stampede that claimed the lives of 10 individuals.
The FCT Police Command has assured the public that the scene has been successfully evacuated, and order has been restored. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The Command has extended its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, and is working closely with the church authorities and other stakeholders to provide support and assistance to those affected.
