The wife of the Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government, Alhaja Khadijat Ibrahim, has taken a bold step in leading the charge against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in her community. On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, she called on women from all wards and corners of the local government to join her in driving a campaign against GBV.
In Nigeria, GBV is a pervasive problem that affects many individuals and communities, yet it often remains shrouded in silence. This silence creates a cultural barrier that leads to shame and isolation for survivors, making it difficult for them to seek help or justice. Many victims feel trapped in fear due to the stigma surrounding their experiences, and societal norms often condone or ignore GBV, further silencing their voices.
The campaign against GBV, led by Alhaja Khadijat Ibrahim, aimed to raise awareness about the devastating effects of GBV and encourage victims to speak out without fear. The campaign team visited every ward and corner of the local government, engaging with both men and women, and conducting interviews to gather firsthand information about the prevalence of GBV in the community.
During the campaign, Alhaja Khadijat Ibrahim emphasized the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for victims of GBV. She urged community members to report any cases of GBV to the appropriate authorities and to provide support and comfort to those affected.
The campaign also focused on educating community members about the different forms of GBV, including rape, female genital mutilation, and domestic violence. Alhaja Khadijat Ibrahim and her team distributed educational materials and engaged in discussions with community members to raise awareness about the issue.
Victims of GBV were advised to speak out without fear, and assurances were given that actions would be taken against perpetrators of GBV. The campaign also emphasized the importance of being mindful of one’s dressing and behavior, as these can sometimes be misinterpreted and lead to unwanted attention.
The campaign against GBV in Ibadan North East Local Government is a commendable effort to address this pervasive problem.
The success of this campaign relies on the collective efforts of community members, leaders, and stakeholders. It is crucial that we all work together to create a society where everyone can live without fear of GBV. By supporting initiatives like this campaign, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by GBV.
