Following the recent cholera outbreak in parts of Lagos State, which has resulted in several fatalities and numerous infections, the Executive Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government, Hon. Ibrahim Akintayo, popularly known as “O mu Yes,” is urging residents to adopt proactive measures to prevent the spread of cholera within the council area.
In a statement signed by the Council’s Information Officer, Ikeoye Oyetoro, the Chairman emphasized that the recent outbreak in Lagos, linked to the consumption of contaminated water and inadequate sanitation, underscores the need for heightened vigilance and precautionary actions to avert a similar situation in Ibadan North East Local Government and Oyo State at large.
“Cholera is a highly infectious and potentially deadly disease that can spread rapidly through contaminated water, food, and human contact. It poses a significant threat to public health but can be prevented and treated with proper sanitation, hygiene, and medical care,” Akintayo stated.
The Council Boss stressed the importance of personal hygiene and proper sanitation in preventing cholera’s spread, noting that the local government is collaborating closely with relevant health authorities to ensure all necessary preventive and control measures are implemented.
To this end, the local government has intensified its sanitation efforts, including increased waste collection and disposal, provision of clean water, and public enlightenment campaigns. These measures are aimed at maintaining a clean and healthy environment to safeguard the community against cholera.
Hon. Akintayo appealed to residents of Ibadan North East Local Government to support the local government’s initiatives to maintain cleanliness and health. He urged the community to take necessary precautions and report any suspected cholera cases to the nearest health facility immediately.
“We must work together to prevent the outbreak of cholera in our community. I urge everyone to take the necessary precautions and report any suspected cases of cholera to the nearest health facility immediately. Let us join hands to keep our community safe and healthy,” Akintayo concluded.
