A 20-year-old British climber has died after falling while exploring a mountain near Malaga, Spain.

The man, whose identity has not been revealed, fell on Wednesday at Puente del Mono, or Monkey Bridge, near El Chorro village.

Emergency services were alerted around 11am, and the climber was found unconscious and in cardiac arrest when rescuers arrived by helicopter, Mail Online reports.

The climber was crossing a protected route called a via ferrata, which features a metal rail for safety. Police attempted to rescue him by winching him from the rocky surface, but he was pronounced dead at a nearby heliport.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil stated: “Members of the specialist Civil Guard Greim mountain rescue team based in Alora near Malaga, supported by a Civil Guard helicopter based in Granada, have rescued the body of a young British man.

“He had suffered a fall while he was crossing a via ferrata in the area known as Monkey Bridge near to El Chorro. When officers reached the man he had gone into cardiac arrest.

Despite practicing CPR on him and evacuating him rapidly from the scene by helicopter to a nearby heliport where medical services were waiting, they were only able to confirm his death.”

The incident occurred on the Caminito del Rey path, a renowned but challenging hiking route.

A post-mortem examination is expected, and police are reporting to an investigating magistrate handling the ongoing court inquiry.

This tragedy follows the October death of a British influencer who fell from the 630ft Castilla-La Mancha bridge while attempting a social media stunt.

Local councillor Macarena Munoz stated: “We have made it clear on several occasions that it’s not something that can be done in any circumstances.”
