Chaos erupted on Thursday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, when a group of armed thugs allegedly loyal to Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, stormed the venue of an event organized by the Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN), an affiliate of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

BCAN had rented the NUJ Secretariat’s main hall to inaugurate its organization officially. However, the event turned violent when thugs, reportedly led by one Segun Aluwaye, who identified himself as the chairman of Berger Park, forced their way through the NUJ Secretariat’s main gate. The attackers disrupted the event, targeting government officials, guests, and participants.

The thugs, many of whom were wearing caps emblazoned with MC Oluomo’s image, wielded dangerous weapons, including machetes, knives, bottles, and sticks. They destroyed cameras, chairs, tables, fans, and other valuable equipment while chasing attendees out of the hall.

The assault occurred shortly after the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, who had been the special guest of honor, departed the venue. Witnesses reported seeing people fleeing in panic, seeking safety from the violence.

Several people were injured in the attack, including NUJ staff and security personnel present at the event. Officers from the Nigerian Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who were invited to provide security for the event, were not spared.

Speaking on the incident, BCAN Chairman, Comrade Prince Israel Ade Adeshola, expressed shock and condemned the attack.

“We were here at the NUJ Secretariat to inaugurate our association, Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN). During the event, some miscreants stormed the venue with machetes, daggers, knives, and other dangerous weapons, forcing dignitaries and guests out of the hall and injuring many of our members,” Adeshola stated.

He added that the inauguration aimed to combat rising cases of “One Chance” robberies in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and establish a reliable database for conductors.

“The attackers were wearing caps bearing MC Oluomo’s pictures and destroyed several items, including injuring police, DSS operatives, and VIO officials who were present. They even chased people into different offices and injured them,” he added.

At the time of reporting, it was unclear whether any arrests had been made. However, police vehicles were stationed outside the NUJ Secretariat to prevent further violence and maintain order.

BCAN has vowed to pursue legal action and called on President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to hold MC Oluomo and his alleged loyalists accountable. The association condemned the act and demanded justice for the victims of the attack.

The NUJ and other civil society groups have also called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of individuals attending lawful gatherings.
