The Oyo State Government marked World Elders’ Day by distributing cash and food supplies to over 1,000 elderly residents, emphasizing its commitment to supporting the welfare of seniors within the community.
At the event, held at the House of Chiefs in Ibadan, the government announced plans to designate one Primary Health Centre (PHC) in each local government area specifically for elderly care. Speaking at the event, Mrs. Toyin Balogun, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to prioritizing the needs of the elderly. This statement was officially released on November 4, 2024, by Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser (Media) to the Oyo State Governor.
The commissioner noted that Oyo State, under the leadership of Governor Makinde, has maintained a people-centered approach, implementing initiatives designed to improve the quality of life across all segments of society. She shared that elderly-focused healthcare services would soon launch in nine local government areas, with plans for expansion to additional regions by 2027.
With the theme “Aging with Dignity,” the event aimed to enhance the lives of seniors and equip them with tools to live healthily, free from isolation and neglect. “This government is truly people-centric,” Mrs. Balogun remarked. “We are introducing initiatives that serve our people’s best interests and ensure no one is left behind.”
The commissioner further highlighted that the elderly are considered valuable contributors, having devoted their lives to family and community service. She explained that the government aims to extend long-term support through regular stipends and dedicated PHC centers for elderly-friendly healthcare, set to roll out initially in nine local areas, with monitoring and assessment guiding future expansions.
Dr. Tunde Ajobo, a nutritionist and guest lecturer at the event, praised the administration’s elderly-friendly policies, including timely pension payments. He encouraged communities to support their seniors, underlining the importance of providing guidance on healthy living in older age.
In a series of remarks, Dr. Saka Balogun, Co-Chair of the Oyo State Elders’ Council, Prince Dotun Oyelade, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, and Honourable Comforter Olajide of the Oyo State House of Assembly, expressed appreciation for Governor Makinde’s ongoing commitment to serving the people across all demographics.
Mr. Olugbenga Jegede, one of the beneficiaries, described the event as well-timed and impactful, commending the government’s efforts in honoring and supporting the elderly.
