A tragic tanker explosion in Majiya village, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has claimed the lives of over 90 people, with more than 50 others hospitalized. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday when a fuel-laden tanker overturned and crashed, igniting a massive explosion.
The tanker, en route from Port Harcourt to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control and fell, causing its contents to spill into nearby gutters and drainages. Villagers, attempting to scoop fuel from the overturned tanker, were caught in the explosion that followed, resulting in widespread fatalities and severe injuries.
The spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway. He explained, “A petrol tanker traveling to Nguru crashed at Majiya village around 12:30 a.m. The tanker’s contents spilled, and some villagers attempted to collect the fuel when it caught fire. As a result, 95 people have been confirmed dead, and 50 others are receiving treatment.”
The police are continuing their investigation and will provide additional information as it becomes available. This tragic incident underscores the dangers associated with scooping fuel from tanker accidents.
