The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 26-year-old Nura Mas’ud for allegedly setting his grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on fire, resulting in her death. The arrest was confirmed in a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Adam, on Saturday. The tragic incident occurred on October 8, 2024, in Mu’azu village, Dan Gwanki ward, Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area (LGA).
According to the police report, Mas’ud went to his family home with a petrol canister, doused his 60-year-old grandmother with fuel, and set her ablaze. She was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. The police swiftly apprehended Mas’ud, and he was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. During interrogation, Mas’ud admitted to the crime.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Mas’ud suffers from mental illness and has been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital. The police also noted that Mas’ud became enraged after his grandmother repeatedly expressed concerns about his physical appearance and health, which he found upsetting. Despite warning her several times, he ultimately carried out the tragic act.
