The Enugu Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended forty-four (44) individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud at various locations across Ebonyi and Anambra States. The arrests, which took place in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday, September 28 and 29, 2024, were based on actionable intelligence linking the suspects to illicit online activities. This development was disclosed in an official statement released on the EFCC’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to the statement, the suspects exploited social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to defraud unsuspecting victims. Preliminary investigations revealed that while some of the individuals used fake identities to engage foreign nationals in fraudulent romantic schemes, others were caught with incriminating documents and files stored on their devices.
During the operation, several items were confiscated, including laptops and high-end mobile phones, which were reportedly used to facilitate their fraudulent activities. The EFCC stated that all suspects are currently cooperating with investigators, and further findings will determine the specific charges to be brought against them.
The suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations. The EFCC reiterated its commitment to curbing cybercrime and advised the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the Commission.
