The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old scavenger, Dauda Sa’idu, for allegedly vandalizing graves and stealing iron rods for resale. The arrest, which took place on September 20, 2024, was confirmed in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Wakili.
According to the statement, Dauda Sa’idu, a resident of Yelwa, unlawfully entered a Christian cemetery in the Yelwan Kagadama area of Bauchi, where he damaged multiple graves and extracted iron rods during the daytime. The stolen rods were then sold in several transactions to scrap metal dealers, yielding sums of N9,500, N12,000, and N5,500.
During police interrogation, Saidu confessed to the crimes, revealing that he used the proceeds to purchase an undisclosed quantity of Indian hemp and food items for personal consumption.
The Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Muhammad, has directed that Dauda Sa’idu be prosecuted upon the completion of the investigation. He further emphasized the need for increased parental supervision, urging parents and guardians to be more vigilant in monitoring the activities of their children and wards to prevent such criminal behavior.
Saidu’s arrest means he will likely miss the upcoming Christmas season behind bars, as authorities move forward with his prosecution for trespassing, vandalism, and theft.
