Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his firm commitment to alleviating poverty and improving the living conditions of the underprivileged across the state. He gave this assurance at the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan, held on Wednesday. The project aims to transform the airport into an international aviation hub, capable of boosting economic activities and positioning Oyo State as a key player in global trade.
Governor Makinde explained that the decision to upgrade the airport to international standards was meticulously informed by data-driven analysis, scientific insights, and strategic considerations. He emphasized that the improved infrastructure would attract foreign direct investment, enhance tourism, and create new employment opportunities, ultimately fostering sustainable economic growth. “This airport upgrade is not just about aviation; it’s about connecting Oyo State to the global market, enhancing trade opportunities, and improving the overall economic standing of our people,” Makinde noted.
The governor further revealed that the first phase of the ambitious project, awarded at a cost of 41 billion Naira, encompasses significant enhancements to the airport’s facilities, including the expansion of the runway, modernizing the terminal building, and incorporating state-of-the-art technology to meet international aviation standards. He assured that the entire phase would be delivered within the next 12 months, in line with the administration’s commitment to timely and efficient project execution.
Governor Makinde underscored the broader socio-economic benefits of the project, pointing out that the airport upgrade would not only facilitate easier access to international markets but also support local businesses, reduce logistical challenges, and improve the ease of doing business in the state.
In his remarks, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State praised Governor Makinde for his foresight and leadership, highlighting his administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and delivering on the promises made to the people of Oyo State. “Governor Makinde has demonstrated what true leadership entails by focusing on projects that will have a lasting impact on the lives of the citizens,” Adeleke stated. He further commended Makinde for his continuous efforts to ensure that Oyo State enjoys the dividends of democracy through purposeful governance, infrastructure development, and poverty alleviation initiatives.
The upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport is expected to be a game-changer for Oyo State, as it positions the state as a strategic gateway for international commerce and tourism, aligning with the administration’s broader vision for economic development and social progress.
