Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, will officially launch the upgrade of Ibadan Airport, Alakia, into an international airport on Wednesday. This major project follows the inauguration of an 11-member committee headed by former Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Bimbo Adekanmbi, to oversee the initiative’s successful implementation.
The Federal Government granted Oyo State approval for the airport’s upgrade after persistent efforts by the state government, aligning with Governor Makinde’s vision of leveraging the facility for economic growth. This was confirmed in a press release signed by Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor, on September 17, 2024.
During the committee’s inauguration on July 30, Governor Makinde highlighted the airport’s pivotal role in supporting his administration’s economic expansion through agribusiness. He clarified that the decision to transform the airport into an international hub was a deliberate and data-driven process, not influenced by competition with other governors.
“The decision to convert our local airport into an international one was made with careful planning and a vision that started four years ago during our first term,” said Makinde. “We’ve already laid a strong foundation, including the completion of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility, concessioned to Bovas Group, and the upgrading of facilities, which has attracted more airlines to include Ibadan in their flight schedules.”
The upgrade aims to boost the state’s economic prospects by facilitating international trade and travel, thereby enhancing Oyo State’s competitiveness in the global market.
