The Federal Government has filed a six-count charge against the organizers of the recent hunger protest at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing them of treason, attempting to destabilize the country, and intimidating the President. The charges were brought by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The charges against the protest organizers have drawn widespread attention and sparked debate among Nigerian citizens, reflecting concerns over the balance between the right to protest and national security. Many have voiced their opinions, with some dismissing the charges as exaggerated, arguing that the protests were peaceful demonstrations against economic hardships and hunger in the country. They have accused the government of using the judiciary to suppress dissent and distract from the real issues raised by the protesters.

On the other hand, supporters of the government’s actions argue that the protest posed a threat to national stability and security, justifying the charges brought against the organizers. They believe that actions undermining the government’s authority and threatening peace must be dealt with decisively.

During the court proceedings, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Justice Peter Lifu, presiding over the case, reserved his ruling on their bail application until September 11, 2024. In the meantime, he ordered the remand of the nine male defendants at Kuje Correctional Centre and one female defendant at Suleja Correctional Centre.

The hunger protest, which was organized to highlight the growing issue of food insecurity and the economic difficulties faced by ordinary Nigerians, has now evolved into a significant legal and political battle. The outcome of the case is eagerly awaited, as it could set a precedent for how similar protests and demonstrations will be handled in the future, raising critical questions about civil liberties, government accountability, and the right to peaceful assembly in Nigeria.
