The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has urged youths across Nigeria to steer clear of internet crimes and embrace the principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability. He emphasized that these values are essential for their future and the nation’s progress.
Olukoyede delivered this message recently during the Grand Finale of the Reality House’s “Head-to-Head” debate held at the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Training Facility in Abuja. This was revealed in a statement on the EFCC’s official X account (formerly Twitter).
Speaking through the Head of the Enlightenment and Reorientation Unit of the EFCC, Assistant Commander of EFCC, ACE II, Aisha Mohammed, Olukoyede addressed the youths, stating: “Corruption is not just someone else’s problem; it is yours, mine, and ours. It encompasses unfair advantages, bribes, lies, and cheating. It is also the silent bystander, the ignored warning sign, and the compromised value. You have a choice: to accept the status quo or challenge it; to be part of the problem or part of the solution. You are the future, and the future is now. Let’s create a Nigerian society of integrity, transparency, and accountability that we can be proud of.”
He highlighted that the debate’s aim of instilling good morals in school children aligns with the EFCC’s “Catching Them Young” policy, which is focused on nurturing an ethical youth population. He encouraged the students to see themselves as future leaders and take a firm stand against corruption and financial crimes, both individually and collectively.
As part of the event, Olukoyede inducted the students as anti-corruption foot soldiers of the EFCC, urging them to consistently embody and promote the values of probity and hard work upheld by the EFCC. He also encouraged them to speak out against corruption and financial crimes whenever they encounter them.
In her remarks, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmud, represented by Grace Adayilo, acknowledged the debate as a powerful tool for developing critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding corruption. She praised the students for their ability to engage in insightful exchanges of ideas with their peers.
The Acting Chairman of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board, Alhassan Sule, also commended the students for their outstanding performances and stressed the vital role of education in society.
The Grand Finale of the debate featured a contest between Junior Secondary School (JSS) Kubwa and JSS Dutse Alhaji II on the topic, “Poverty: A Threat to School Population.” JSS Dutse Alhaji II emerged victorious.
Awards were presented to students who delivered outstanding performances, and all participants who made meaningful contributions during the EFCC’s lecture on cybercrime were honored with souvenirs and named the Commission’s Ambassadors.
