The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged filmmakers in Nigeria to exercise caution and perform thorough due diligence before accepting financial backing for their movie projects.

This call was made by the Chairman of the EFCC, Olanipekun Olukoyede, during the second edition of the Lagos International Film and Cinema Convention. The event, organized by the National Film and Video Censors Board, was themed “Morality and Ethics in Film Production in Nigeria” and brought together film producers, exhibitors, and distributors for a roundtable discussion.

Speaking on behalf of the EFCC Chairman, the Head of Public Affairs for the Lagos Directorate, Ayo Oyewole, emphasized the importance of maintaining ethical standards in the film industry. He highlighted the growing concern that the film industry could become an easy conduit for illicit funds, thus urging filmmakers to be vigilant in ensuring that their funding sources are legitimate and not tied to illegal activities.

Olukoyede’s remarks underscored the critical role that filmmakers play in safeguarding the integrity of the industry by refusing to be used as tools for money laundering or other financial crimes. The EFCC’s message was clear: the film industry must remain a place of creativity and cultural expression, not a haven for dirty money.
