The Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the recent actions of the federal government, accusing it of waging a war against the labor movement following a raid by security forces on its headquarters in Abuja. The raid, which took place under the pretext of apprehending an international terrorist suspect, has been met with widespread outrage from the NLC and its affiliates.
At a press conference held in Abuja today, NLC leaders unequivocally rejected the police’s justification for the invasion, calling it a flimsy cover-up for what they believe is a deliberate attempt to intimidate and weaken the labor movement. They demanded an immediate apology from the government, the return of all seized items, and the release of any individuals detained during the raid. The NLC emphasized that such actions are unacceptable in a democratic society and undermine the rights of workers to organize and advocate for their interests.
In addition to the raid, the NLC criticized recent government efforts to interfere in the internal affairs of the organization. This includes a controversial proposal to reduce the tenure of trade union leaders, a move the NLC argues is a clear violation of labor laws and international labor conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory. The union leaders vowed to resist any attempt to undermine the autonomy of the labor movement and warned that these actions could lead to widespread unrest among workers.
The NLC’s response comes amidst growing tensions between the government and the labor movement, as the union continues to fight for workers’ rights in the face of what it describes as increasing authoritarianism. The NLC reiterated its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers and warned the government against further attempts to destabilize the organization, stating that any such efforts would be met with strong resistance.’
