The 33 Local Government Chairmen in Oyo State have decided to leave the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) following the Supreme Court’s judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments across the country.

This development has sparked varied reactions, with the chairmen collectively declaring their unwavering support for Governor Seyi Makinde.

The Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of local government councils, granting them full financial autonomy and ordering that their allocations be paid directly to them rather than through state governments.

However, Governor Makinde has expressed disagreement with the Supreme Court’s judgment, asserting that the federal government cannot dictate how the state manages its affairs.

In an interview with DparrotNews, Barrister Adewale Oyesola elaborated on the potential consequences of the chairmen’s decision, emphasizing the significant shift in local governance dynamics this move could entail.

Efforts to reach the chairman of Egbeda Local Government, who also serves as the Oyo State ALGON Chairman, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls at the time of this report. Meanwhile, the Oyo State chairmen have decided to establish a new association, distancing themselves from ALGON, the national umbrella body for local governments in Nigeria.
