The Oyo State Government has declared a state of heightened vigilance in response to a potential cholera outbreak in the state. In a swift move to curb the possible spread of the disease, health officials are urging residents to maintain high levels of hygiene, particularly with food and water sources.

The alert follows a visit by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, to a private hospital in Ibadan where two suspected cholera cases are currently receiving treatment. Dr. Ajetunmobi emphasized the importance of immediate action, noting that cholera is highly infectious and can cause severe acute watery diarrhea, leading to severe dehydration.

“Cholera is a serious disease that can spread rapidly if not contained,” Dr. Ajetunmobi stated. “We urge all residents to ensure they practice good hygiene, including thorough handwashing, proper sanitation, and ensuring that food and water are safe for consumption.”

The Commissioner reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm, as the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with other partners, is actively managing the situation. “We have mobilized our resources and are working closely with healthcare providers to monitor and respond to any cases of cholera promptly,” she added.

The state government has also activated emergency response teams and set up cholera treatment centers across the state to handle potential cases. Additionally, public health campaigns are being intensified to educate the populace on preventive measures and symptoms of cholera, encouraging them to seek medical help immediately if they experience symptoms.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspected cases of cholera to the nearest health facility or contact the state health hotlines for immediate assistance. The government also emphasizes the importance of drinking boiled or treated water, eating well-cooked food, and maintaining clean living environments to prevent the spread of the disease.

Dr. Ajetunmobi concluded, “While we remain vigilant and prepared, the cooperation of every resident is crucial in preventing an outbreak. Together, we can ensure the health and safety of our communities.”

The Oyo State Government continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary to keep the public informed and safe.
