The Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government, Hon. Ibrahim Akintayo (Omu Yes), has called on Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of Chief MKO Abiola and other democracy heroes as the nation celebrates Democracy Day today, June 12th.
In a statement signed by the Council’s Information Officer, Ikeoye Oyetoro, Hon. Akintayo emphasized the importance of honoring the courage and resilience of Chief MKO Abiola, whose unwavering dedication to the June 12 mandate paved the way for the freedom and democracy enjoyed today. “Today, we commemorate a pivotal moment in our nation’s history – Democracy Day. We honor the courage and resilience of Chief MKO Abiola, a true martyr of Nigerian democracy,” Akintayo said.
He highlighted that Chief Abiola’s sacrifice is a reminder that democracy is an ongoing journey requiring continuous effort and dedication from all citizens. “As we celebrate our democracy today, we must also acknowledge the challenges that lie ahead and recommit ourselves to building a Nigeria where every citizen can thrive, where our diversity is celebrated, and where our collective progress is prioritized,” the Chairman noted.
Hon. Akintayo commended the people of Ibadan North East Local Government for their commitment to democratic values, stating, “In our local government, we are dedicated to upholding the principles of democracy. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our local government is a model of democratic excellence.”
He urged Nigerians to learn from the lessons of the past, recognize the sacrifices of past heroes, and ensure that their struggles are not in vain. “We must continue to work together to ensure that every citizen has access to the dividends of democracy, including good governance, economic prosperity, and social justice,” he said.
Hon. Akintayo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to good governance, economic development, and the welfare of citizens. “We will continue to strengthen our institutions, promote the rule of law, and protect the rights of all citizens,” he pledged.
In conclusion, Hon. Akintayo called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to building a better Nigeria, saying, “Let us honor the memory of Chief MKO Abiola and our past heroes by continuing to strive for a better Nigeria. Let us work together to ensure that our democracy continues to grow stronger, more resilient, and more inclusive.”
