The Oyo State Government has directed the 33 newly elected local government chairmen to oversee and regulate mining activities within their respective jurisdictions. This directive was issued by Mr. Abiodun Oni, the Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency, during a crucial meeting held at the Agency’s office in Ibadan.
Mr. Oni emphasized the importance of local government involvement in the mining sector, despite its regulation at the federal level. He underscored that local governments have a significant role in ensuring that mining operations are conducted safely and with the full consent of the host communities.
Addressing the chairmen, Mr. Oni stressed the necessity for miners to obtain all required documentation and agreements before commencing their operations. He specifically highlighted the importance of obtaining consent letters from the communities and finalizing Community Development Agreements (CDAs), which outline the benefits and responsibilities of the mining companies towards the local communities.
“Although mining is regulated by the federal government, local government authorities must ensure that all mining activities within their areas are carried out responsibly and with the explicit consent of the host communities,” said Mr. Oni. “It is imperative that miners secure the necessary consent letters and CDAs to promote transparency and mutual benefit.”
He also pointed out that overseeing mining operations would not only ensure the safety and well-being of the communities but also foster sustainable development and economic growth in the state.
The meeting concluded with Mr. Oni encouraging the chairmen to actively engage with community leaders and mining operators to facilitate smooth and compliant mining operations. This initiative aims to create a harmonious relationship between mining companies and local communities, ensuring that the extraction of minerals contributes positively to the local economy and development.
By taking these steps, the Oyo State Government seeks to strengthen local oversight of mining activities, ensuring that they are conducted in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
