The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to support Peter Obi in 2027 if the party decides it is the South-East’s turn to produce the presidential candidate.
Atiku, who served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007, explained that he contested the 2023 presidential ticket because the PDP had decided to open the contest to all party members, without zoning it to any specific region. He affirmed that if the PDP decides to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South or specifically the South-East, he would respect that decision and refrain from running, committing to fully support the party’s nominee.
Furthermore, Atiku highlighted that his recent meeting with Peter Obi might indicate a potential alliance leading up to the 2027 general elections. He suggested that a merger between the PDP and the Labour Party is possible, which could strengthen their collective chances against other political opponents. This meeting, according to Atiku, signifies a willingness to collaborate and unite for the common goal of enhancing the political landscape and governance in Nigeria.
