The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 35-year-old zoo worker, Babaji Daule, who was fatally attacked by a lion at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.
According to the state police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the tragic incident occurred when the handler, a native of Bauchi State, failed to properly secure the locks and barricades of the lion’s enclosure before attempting to feed the animal. This oversight allowed the lion to break free and attack the handler, causing severe injuries to his neck that ultimately led to his death.
Following the incident, the victim’s body was recovered and transported to the Ijaye General Hospital mortuary for further examination. Authorities stated that the lion, which was still gripping the handler at the time of the rescue attempt, had to be shot to release its hold and ensure the safety of the other zoo staff and visitors.
The Ogun State Police Command is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future and ensure compliance with safety protocols at the zoo facility.
