The Ofokutu Royal Dynasty, a prominent royal family in Ijeshaland, Osun State, has publicly criticized Governor Ademola Adeleke over the recent installation of Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup as the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland. At the heart of the controversy is the selection process, which the family’s chairman, Prince Adebanji Obembe, has deemed “unacceptable”.

According to Prince Obembe, the Ofokutu family was next in line to produce a candidate for the throne, as other ruling houses had previously taken their turn. However, the state government allegedly disregarded this tradition and instead installed Haastrup, who hails from the Ajimoko Royal Family of the same ruling house.

Furthermore, Princess Oluwatoyin Faloye, another member of the Ofokutu family, expressed dissatisfaction with the installation process, highlighting the exorbitant cost of contesting the throne. Specifically, the state government required each contestant to purchase a form worth N10 million, a requirement that has sparked outrage among the Ofokutu family and their supporters.

The controversy has taken a legal turn, with the Ofokutu Royal Dynasty and the Ijesha People taking action against Governor Adeleke over the installation of Haastrup. The family claims that the state ignored a court injunction to proceed with Haastrup’s installation, further fueling tensions in the region.
